Choose How You Go Solar
Solar panels are mounted on top of the roof you already have; GAF solar shingles are the roof itself, installed as part of a new roof. Both lower your energy bills.
Side by side
Solar Panels vs. GAF Solar Shingles
Each system has its advantages: the right choice comes down to your roof, your energy goals and how you want your home to look.
| Solar panels | GAF solar shingles | |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Mounted on racks on top of the roof you already have | Installed as part of a full roof replacement, as the roof itself |
| Look | Mounted above the roof, standing several inches off the roofline | Lie flush with the rest of the roof, barely noticeable from the street |
| Your roof deck | Brackets and mounts that need holes drilled into the roof | No racks, and no mounts drilled into the roof deck |
| Upfront cost | Generally a lower cost per watt installed | Higher, as it combines roofing and solar; cost-effective when you need a new roof anyway |
| Power | The most power per square foot, and can be angled toward the sun | Need more roof area for the same output: suit medium to large roofs with open sun |
| Warranty | Performance warranties of 25 to 30 years; the roof and the solar may need separate warranties | One manufacturer for the roof and the solar, with a 25-year warranty on power production |
| Best for | A roof in good shape, a smaller or partly shaded roof, or the lowest upfront cost | A roof that needs replacing soon, or a seamless look |
Not sure which suits your home? We’ll look at your roof and your energy use at your free solar estimate and help you choose.

Questions
Solar Options, Answered
What’s the difference between solar panels and solar shingles?
Solar panels are mounted on racks on top of your existing roof. GAF solar shingles are the roof itself: they lie flush with the rest of the roof and make power, installed as part of a new roof. We install both and will help you choose.
Do I need a new roof to go solar?
Not for solar panels: they are added to the roof you already have. GAF Timberline Solar shingles are installed as part of a full roof replacement, which makes them a cost-effective choice when your roof is nearing the end of its life.
Which makes more power?
Panels make a little more power per square foot and can be angled toward the sun, which helps on smaller or partly shaded roofs. Solar shingles need more roof area for the same output, so they suit medium to large roofs with open sun.
Which costs less?
Solar panels generally have a lower upfront cost per watt installed. Solar shingles cost more at first because they are a new roof and solar in one, and offer greater long-term value when you are replacing an aging roof anyway.
How do they hold up in storms?
Both are built to withstand the elements. GAF solar shingles are designed to handle wind, rain, hail and snow, and can withstand winds up to 130 MPH.
Can I finance my solar project?
Yes. There are various options, including solar loans, leases and power purchase agreements. Talk to us about the best option for you at your free estimate, and ask about $1,500 off your solar project.
