The Complete Guide to Solar Roof Installation: What to Expect with Timberline Solar Shingles

Ready to go solar—but not sure what the installation process actually involves? You’re not alone. At Panda Exteriors, we believe homeowners should feel confident and informed every step of the way. That’s why we’ve created this complete walkthrough of the GAF Solar Shingles installation process, from the initial consultation to final system activation.

Whether you’re just exploring your options or already gearing up to install, here’s what you can expect when you choose GAF Solar Shingles  with Panda Exteriors.

Pre-Installation: Assessments, Permits & Planning

Before a single shingle goes on your roof, there’s critical prep work that ensures your solar system is safe, legal, and designed for maximum performance.

Here’s what happens first:

• Site Assessment: Our team conducts a full evaluation of your roof’s structure, slope, orientation, and sun exposure. We also review attic access and the current condition of your roof.

• Structural Review: Since Timberline Solar Shingles replace your existing roof material, it’s essential that the decking is in great shape. If not, we’ll address that as part of the process.

• Permit Applications: Solar projects require building permits and utility approvals. Panda Exteriors handles all of this on your behalf—including paperwork for your local permitting office and utility provider.

• HOA Coordination: If you live in a community with a Homeowners Association, we’ll help you prepare and submit the necessary documentation for approval.

This stage is all about getting you approved and ready to install without delays.

Installation Timeline: What Happens On-Site

Once your permits are in and materials are ready, it’s go time! One of the biggest advantages of the Timberline Solar™ system is its quick and efficient installation process.

• Day 1: We begin by removing any old roofing materials and prepping the deck. Then we install an underlayment and start laying the Timberline Solar Shingles. Our team also installs any traditional GAF Solar Shingles needed to blend the solar seamlessly into your roof.

• Day 2 (if needed): We finish laying the shingles, complete the electrical system connections, and finalize all flashing and sealing details.

Depending on the size of your roof and weather conditions, most projects are fully completed in 1 to 2 days.

Roof Integration: A Seamless, Smart Design

Unlike rack-mounted solar panels  that sit on top of your roof, Timberline Solar Shingles are part of the roof itself. This integrated approach offers better protection, aesthetics, and performance.

Here’s how that works:

• Flashing & Sealing: Our crews use GAF’s proprietary flashing materials around roof penetrations, chimneys, and edges to ensure watertight protection.

• Shingle Matching: We install GAF architectural shingles around the solar field for a clean, uniform look that maintains your home’s curb appeal.

• No Extra Holes: Traditional panels require dozens of penetrations. Timberline Solar Shingles use nail-in installation, reducing risk of leaks and simplifying the install.

The result is a sleek, high-performance solar system that looks like a premium roof—not a science experiment.

Electrical Work: Powering Your Home Safely

Solar isn’t just about shingles—it’s also about electrical work done right. Our licensed electricians handle everything with precision:

• Inverter Installation: We install a high-efficiency inverter that converts solar energy into usable power for your home. Depending on your design, this may be a central or microinverter system.

• Panel Upgrades: If your home’s electrical panel isn’t up to code or lacks capacity, we’ll perform any necessary upgrades before connecting the system.

• Utility Coordination: Once installed, we coordinate with your utility to set up net metering (where available) so you can receive credits for any extra energy your system generates.

You’ll also receive access to a monitoring platform, allowing you to track your solar output and system performance in real time.

Quality Assurance: Built to the Highest Standards

Panda Exteriors is proud to be a GAF Master Elite Roofing Contractor, a distinction earned by only 2% of contractors nationwide. That means you can trust your solar installation is performed to rigorous GAF standards, including:

• Manufacturer-approved installation techniques

• Certified crews trained in both roofing and solar

• Ongoing quality checks during installation

Before we leave your property, we conduct a final system inspection, including a full cleanup, visual inspection of shingle alignment, and a test of all electrical components.

This ensures your system is storm-ready, code-compliant, and activation-ready.
